Abstract : Grammar teaching is a priviledged position for observing the debates relative to school knowledge. On the one hand, nearly all the main themes tackled in that field are discussed, on the other hand, the long standing debate (the first manifestations go back to Antiquity) and the constantly revived actuallity of the matter attest that it is a real place of civilisation, at least in the greek, latin and french speaking world. First, the traditional terms of the debate wille be re-evocated, the theoretical, didactic and educational re-foundations that have been established for a quarter of a century will be examined ; then, the usually neglected psycholinguistic and cognitive points of view will be considered. Moreover, we will not leave out the tradition according to which each person interested in a subject brings, even modestly, his or her contribution and opinion.
Key-words : grammar, teaching, metalinguistic aspect, metalanguage.
