Abstract : Many official instructions and curricular publications deal with the allophone children as secondary school pupils throughout the history of applied linguistics in French as a foreign language and as a second language. Indeed, these documents bear witness to the evolution of the representation of this peculiar learner and of his/her special needs in resources and teaching tools in order for him/her to acquire linguistic and cultural skills to communicate both in life and at school. That is the reason why French as a second language is a specific and complex field in applied linguistics. Since the XIXth century, it has also gradually evolved in step with - or versus - French as a foreign language and French as a native tongue. This article mainly questions the official discourse which defines the French as a second language research field and its articulation with French as a foreign language, French as a native tongue and school standards.
